LG abandons US Blu-ray launch

LG BD player

LG Electronics has dropped plans to introduce a player into the American market. The move follows the announcement that the brand has signed a patent cross licensing agreement for optical disc related products with proponent Toshiba. The deal provides each company with access to the related patents and technologies of the other; the agreement covers worldwide patents for optical discs, disc drives, players and recorders that use them. However, rather than just announce a switch of allegiance to HD DVD, LG America’s Vice president of sales, Bob Perry, has reportedly said that the company has decided to work on a dual-format HD DVD/Blu-ray Disc player for introduction later this year. This annoucement has confused the AV zombie, as the licensing agreements for both next-generation disc systems specifically prohibit the development of dual format products.
