How long will a PVR last?

March 16th, 2006 · No Comments

One question often asked of the new breed of hard drive (HDD) video recording devices is: how long will the HDD last? Computer users are certainly not unfamiliar with the phenomena of crashed drives. So how long will the average drive last in a consumer electronics product, such as a DVD recorder or Sky+? “When it comes to heavy use or functionality, no one actually knows,” admits Panasonic’s Kazuhiro Tsuga. “But it is feasible that it will last for a long time.” Panasonic’s own ageing tests indicate that seven to eight years is possible.” Tsuga has this advice for users of hard drive based devices: “The most dangerous use for a hard drive is to stop using for a long time and then restart using. Constant regular use is the best practice. The other big problem is mechanical shock, so don’t drop the box.”
