So near yet so far. Toshiba’s stateside roll-out of its players will be delayed until April 18, as the brand says it wants to sync up with the first HD DVD software releases from Warner. In a short statement the company says: “In order to maximize the launch of HD DVD, we intend to synchronize the launch of our players with HD DVD title releases.” The company has been conducting a major HD DVD road-show, demonstrating the benefits of the new format to casual shoppers and mallrats.

In the current issue 129 of Home Cinema Choice there is an article on the arrival of the new Toshiba Qosmio G30 laptop equiped with a HD-DVD drive. It looks just up my street.

Yet when I contact Toshiba re: availability dates in the UK I have received the following response:

“”Qosmio G30″ will be available in the Japanese market in mid May. Furthermore no announcement is expected shortly in respect of its release into the European market.”

The article in Home Cinema Choice implies a much earlier timescale.

    So what is the reality?

Toshiba’s HD DVD-ROM drive equipped Qosmio AV notebook PC was originally due to ship into the UK at the end of April or early May. But that date now appears to be slipping (like all things that have to do with HD DVD or Blu-ray). At present Toshiba could not clarify a new launch date, but we’ll update as soon as the info comes in.
