Sony Computer Entertainment has unveiled a website to foster what it calls its E-Distribution Initiative. The brand hopes the site, at www.playstation.com/beyond, will aid the in the development in a new era of play-per-play gaming. At the heart of the EDI is the PlayStation Network Platform, which will allow users to chat online and send emails for free; but unlike Microsoft’s Live service, which charges an annual fee, will offer online gaming on a game by game basis, charging for additional online content. Depending on the game, this could range from extra weapons and characters, to access to specific game levels.
Phil Harrison, Sony PlayStation President, speaking at the recent What’s Next Games developers conference, believes that the move will “herald a radical change in the way people play,” and, naturally, how game companies build greater revenues.
