Bluetooth may be the under-achiever when it comes to wireless communications, but that could be about to change. The Bluetooth special interest group has confirmed that the next Bluetooth specification, ultra-wideband Bluetooth, will allow video (both standard and high-def) and high-quality audio streaming to and from compliant devices. These could appear in the market early 2008. The technology opens the door for short-distance wireless (and trouble-free) AV connection for consumer electronics like DVD players and displays, thereby doing away with traditional cable spaghetti, as well as enabling the transfer of video to devices like the Video iPod. Bluetooth UWB would be fully compatible with current Bluetooth products, of which over 500 million have been sold worldwide.
