Sony and Samsung’s joint venture company, S-LCD Corp., is to invest 240 million dollars in its existing LCD panel making facility. This will increase the capacity of their seventh generation LCD screen factory to 90,000 substrates a month (up from 60,000). The announcement comes shortly after the two companies pledged two billion dollars to create an eighth generation LCD factory.
Sony’s appetite for flat panels seems insatiable. The corporation got off to a slow start in the flatscreen business, but by the end of its last fiscal year (March) it had shipped 2.8 million units worldwide, to claim a number one market share in several key territories, including the US. This year, that shipment figure looks set to double.
