HD DVD recorders to debut before World Cup

Toshiba has confirmed that its first shipment of 1,000 Japanese players, introduced on March 31, has now sold out. A second wave of 500 units was shipped to retailers last week. Toshiba celebrated this with a promotion at a Tokyo video rental store, projecting images onto a 72inch screen. Such local promotions are commonplace in Japanese CE retail.
The company claimed to be happy with its HD DVD launch, saying that the players had wide ranging appeal and sales were not just limited to video enthusiasts.
Retailers though seem less convinced, as stores await the appearance of packaged media (only a handful of local Japanese titles are available) and, more significantly, the introduction of HD DVD recorders (pictured above in prototype form). HD DVD recoders are seen as vital if the Japanese market is to develop. Toshiba says its first generation recorders will appear in Tokyo stores before the start of the World Cup.
