The PVR is dead! Long live Freeview Playback

May 18th, 2006 · No Comments

Digital recorders are to get a boost with the introduction of Freeview Playback branding – just don’t call them PVRs.
Recent research by Freeview has apparently shown that there’s little consumer awareness of digital TV recorders, a trend it hopes to reverse by popularizing the concept via its new Freeview Playback initiative.
The Freeview operation intends to establish Freeview Playback, rather than PVR or digital recorder, as the generic name for all terrestrial digital recorders.
Cary Wakefield, Freeview General Manager said, “Our success to date has been based upon offering viewers a simple way to get digital television. Working with the industry, Freeview is committed to delivering a strong brand to increase consumer awareness of the benefits of digital TV recorders and to make the technology easy to understand. The launch of Freeview Playback is crucial to driving consumer understanding and uptake and will help to clearly define the category.”
John Edwards, Director of Communications at ALBA plc commented, “We welcome these initiatives and support the launch of Freeview Playback. The industry needs to work together to help make digital TV recorders a success and deliver the benefits of the technology to consumers.”
The first PVRs to carry the Freeview Playback branding will appear during September.
