Time for Acer to put a Ferrari TV in the fast lane

Ferrari Acer -20-02 monitor

Acer, the Taiwanese PC brand, currently rated fourth worldwide (just behind China’s Lenovo, which leapt to third after swallowing IBM’s PC division last year) is pushing hard to break into the home electronics TV market. Acer’s CEO J.T. Wang wants the company to trouser 1billion US dollars from sales by 2008.
Like Michael Dell, he sees growth outside the PC market as one of the few options left, as the IT business gets ever harder to milk. The company currently offers a Ferrari-branded red laptop in its range, alongside a racing-red monitor. A scarlet TV, licensed from Scuderia Ferrari, would seem the obvious next step.
But don’t hold your breath waiting for one just yet. Acer spokesman Paul Kinsler says none are planned as yet. “I’m confident that there are no plans for a dedicated Ferrari TV. However, the Acer LCD Monitor (pictured above) comes with a built-in TV tuner so I guess we already have that option.”
That’s as may be. But if Acer is serious about getting further up the grid of mainstream LCD TV brands, if not taking pole position, it’s pretty clear what needs to be done…
