The Blu-ray production lines have started rolling at Sony DADC, prior to the introduction of BD hardware in June. Sony DADC has a total of 13 production facilities worldwide, ready to produce pre-packaged media. In the US alone, Sony has the capacity to produce 50,000 single-layer 25 Gbyte BD-ROM movie discs per month, although that’s unlikely to be tested for some time.
The initial releases include House of Flying Daggers, Resident Evil Apocalypse, The Fifth Element and Terminator 2. If demand warrants it, the company claims it can bump output to 5 million discs per month by the autumn.
Later this year, replication lines able to manufacture 50 GB dual-layer BD-ROM discs will also go live.
