Japanese mobile phone operator NTT DoCoMo announced yesterday that it will make all its handsets GSM compatible, allowing usage across 130 countries. In about 70 territories, DoCoMo’s i-mode Internet access service will also be available. While Japan ‘s FOMA brand third-generation cell phones offers far faster connection speeds via Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (W-CDMA), greater global compatibility through GSM is seen as increasingly desirable. The new models automatically selected the fastest connection, depending where in the world they are used. The news will doubtless come as a relief to business users who travel to and from the country on a regular basis.
