New TV tech threatens LCD and plasma

May 22nd, 2006 · No Comments

A Canadian company better known for its drugs and potions believes it can deliver flatscreen TVs using new solid state technology for half the price of current and models. Westaim Corporation (westaim.com) says that it has the tech, already developed by its subsidiary iFire Corp, but needs a joint venture partner to bring it to market.
iFire has already shown one inch thick 34 inch prototypes, which swap plasma gasses and liquid crystal for chemicals, paste and dielectric material layered onto glass. The company says that with no backlight, its screens offer far better viewing angles than LCD and superior image fidelity. It hopes to begin production 2007.
