First European HD DVD debuts with DTS-HD audio

May 25th, 2006 · No Comments

2046 HD DVD

The first European has been produced by French arthouse label Ocean Films. The HD DVD, futuristic Hong Kong romance 2046, was presented at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival to the President of the Feature Films Jury, and director of the movie, Wong Kar Wai, by Laurent Villaume, CEO of replicators QOL.
The disc is also significant in that it’s the first HD DVD to feature Master Audio, as the exclusive lossless sound format. DTS-HD Master Audio is bit-for-bit identical to studio master quality. At present, there is no hardware available to play the format back, although conventional receivers and amplifiers will deliver a high-quality DTS track. Says Gerben Van Duyl, Director of Business Development for Consumer Content for DTS Europe: “The fact that Ocean Films has chosen DTS-HD Master Audio for its first HD-DVD attests to their support of our new format. Soon consumers around the world will be able to enjoy more movies like 2046 in high definition video and high definition DTS audio.”
