Disney joins digital download revolution

May 31st, 2006 · No Comments

Disney has joined the digital download revolution. A selection of around 30 titles from its current and back catalogue have been made available via the US CinemaNow download site.
Files can be viewed either on a PC or a portable device. Titles include (star is pictured at the UK premiere, above) and Chicken Little. New releases are priced at a hefty 20 dollars, with older fare goes for 10 bucks. As with downloads from the UK’s lovefilm.com operation, American buyers get one file for PC playback and a smaller one for portable use. These are not compatible with video iPods, as they are in Windows Media format.
Says BVHE executive VP of sales, distribution and trade marketing, Pat Fitzgerald: “We are pleased about this broadband distribution opportunity, which allows Buena Vista Home Entertainment to provide viewers with more flexibility in viewing their favorite new releases on this emerging distribution platform.”
