TiVo, a pioneer in digital recording, has entered the broadband TV arena. The company has launched an innovative IPTV service, known as TiVoCast, which delivers content to its 400,000 US subscribers via the showcase area on the TiVo Central main menu.
Programming is free to watch because it is funded by advertising. While PVR functionality remains at the core of the TiVo service, the company says that TiVoCast will support a growing niche of material from suppliers unable to deliver via conventional broadcasting. Technology, fashion and food programming are all planned.
