Sony to include portable video version on Blu-ray discs

June 12th, 2006 · No Comments

Blu ray discs

movie discs could ship with a secondary file of the relevant movie (or supplemental material) in Windows Media or PSP file format. So says Benjamin Feingold, president of worldwide home entertainment for Sony Pictures. The revelation came during an interview for US trade magazine Home Media Retailing.
Such a move would be a canny way of building interest in the BD format. Currently the topic of digital downloads is red hot in Hollywood.
Coincidentally, Sony Pictures is expected to announce two more digital distribution deals this Summer. Currently it uses both Movielink and CinemaNow to distribute to US downloaders.
When asked if the growing interest in digital downloads will undermine HD packaged media, Feingold replies: “It’s an alternative. Because it is low resolution it is potentially more portable and takes up less space than a Blu-ray Disc. But clearly, if you want the best quality and the absolute best experience, you are going to watch on a big TV in your house, then you will want Blu-ray high-definition with the best audio. I think it will be the primary format and over time it will eclipse DVD.” Feingold says bullishly.
