Flatscreens falter as glut grows

June 13th, 2006 · No Comments

Big name brands are beginning to pay the price for the growing flatscreen glut. While demand is booming, it’s just not booming fast enough to soak up the flood of TVs coming to the market.
Taiwanese LCD producer AU Optronics (AUO), was one of the first big vendors to confirm worldwide sales have been slower than expected this quarter. Once it made the announcement, its shares tumbled 11 percent. This then impacted on Sharp, LG.Philips, Chi Mei and others.
But there’s no shortage of new brands eager to try for a slice of the overheating pie. Taiwanese scanner brand Microtek is the latest name to jump into screens.
