Toshiba has released a free firmware upgrade for it first generation HD DVD players. Owners of HD-XA1, HD-A1 and HD-D1 models can download it via the Ethernet connection on the back of the player.
The update is designed to improve picture quality via HDMI and reduce start-up times. Users need to configure the Ethernet connection and then update the player via the Maintenance sub menu of the General GUI tab.
Firmware upgrades are “nothing new,” says Toshiba’s VP marketing Jodi Sally. “The great thing about these HD DVD players is that via the Ethernet connection consumers can perform the upgrades themselves.”
