The rush to internet movie downloading will not take the steam out of the emerging high definition packaged media market.
So believes Thomas Lesinski, president the Paramount’s newly formed Digital Media Group. Talking to trade magazine Home Media retailing, Lesinski says “new windows don’t put other business models out of business. High-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray packaged media is unlikely to have a significant overlap with digital distribution in the near future. Given the size of the files for high-definition, I can’t see HD competing with digital distribution in the short term.”
Paramount is expected to sign deals with multiple download vendors by the end of the year: “Whenever a new distribution model arrives, studios have found a way to make them as incremental as possible. Digital distribution is a significant opportunity on the immediate horizon.”
Lesinski adds that Paramount is committed delivering content to consumers whenever and wherever they want. “We have to do it quickly, before we get into a situation that looks similar to what happened in the music business.”
