Samsung nukes universal HD disc player reports

June 29th, 2006 · No Comments

Online ‘reports’ of a Samsung combi / player have been swiftly dismissed by the Korean giant.
The story appears to stem from a series of briefings held by the company in Seoul with a number of international press representatives. What fuelled the excitement was a PowerPoint presentation which cryptically presented a ‘Universal’ HD disc player on the company’s product roadmap.
Samsung says this was meant to indicate its ability to make such a machine, not its intention to do so. The current HD DVD and Blu-ray licenses actually prohibit the production of any combi machine.
According to Du-hyon Kim, Assistant manager in Samsung’s home platform product planning group, reportedly said: “We can’t say when we might introduce such a (combi) player. Samsung has no intention to join the HD DVD player market,” then added “but if market trends are going to HD DVD or to a universal player, then we are going too.”
