LG pips Panasonic to take top spot in plasma rankings

July 4th, 2006 · No Comments

LG has taken top spot in the display market, according to market research company iSuppli Corp. The South Korean corporation jumped to the top in Quarter One 2006, when its worldwide PDP unit production rose to 31.1 percent, up from 27.5 percent in Q4 2005.
According to iSupply this nudged the company one percentage point ahead of long-time plasma leader Matsushita, parent of Panasonic. During the first quarter, LG and country mate Samsung (rated third) together accounted for a massive 54.5 percent of all PDP unit shipments.
Both companies have moved to larger fabrication techniques which have enabled more panels to be cut from each mother glass.
The top seven plasma display companies, based on the percentage of units shipped, for Q1, are: LG (first), Panasonic (second), Samsung (third), Pioneer (fourth), Hitachi (fifth), CPT (sixth) and Formosa (seventh).
