Nintendo has jumped Mario-like on rumours that it will launch its Wii console as early as September. A company spokesman said that the Corporation was only planning an announcement in September, and this “led to some confusion.”
Few doubt though that Ninty intends to beat the PS3 out of the gate, so a mid October date is a fairly good guestimate. The console has already garnered excellent press thanks to its innovative wand controller and mad gameplay (pictured above).
According to market research company Enterbrain, sales of games have boomed in Japan, as Nintendo’s DS handheld goes from strength to strength.
During the first half of the year, combined revenue from both soft- and hardware grew to 277 billion Yen, up from 207 billion Yen year on year.
The DS Lite is the star performer, having already sold 2.6 million units. The original DS has shifted 1.3 million units. By way of comparison, the Sony PSP has sold less than a million
