Toshiba plots to end Samsung flash dominance

July 9th, 2006 · No Comments

Toshiba has played down reports in the Japanese press that it is to invest 600 billion yen in a flash memory plant, in an effort to unseat market leader Samsung.
The move is thought to be part of a one trillion yen strategy to dominate the global semiconductor industry.
“At the moment,” said Toshiba in a statement, “the details of the plan, including candidate sites, are still under consideration and yet to be determined.” When finalized, Toshiba is expected to confirm that part of the investment will be paid for by co-conspirator SanDisk Corp. Production is expected to begin in 2008.
In 2005, Samsung owned over half of the entire global market for NAND-type flash memory, used in everything from mobile music players to digital cameras.
