Samsung targets high-end LCD TV buyers

Despite claiming the number one TV sales slot worldwide in volume earlier this year, Samsung is still chasing the number one slot when it comes to revenue.
The company says its global TV sales will total 2.5 billion dollars this year. This is expected to jump to 4 billion dollars by 2008. Samsung intends to get there by targeting high-end TV buyers with highly-specified designer TVs. Typical of its current thinking is its Series 51 and 52 screens, with their wine glass design, created by the Corporation’s top industrial designer Yunje Kang.
They were known internally as Bordeaux, a moniker which couldn’t be used internally because of copyright concerns. It was all about delivering a ‘message’ product, says the firm. Although Samsung is the world’s third biggest producer of panels, it’s main focus is to remain on . So don’t expect too many plasma ‘messages’ to come to market.
Youngjoo Park, senior manager of Samsung’s Sales and Marketing Group for the Americas, says the brand isn’t concerned about producing a 1080p plasma. “We’re more excited about 1080p LCD,” he says
