1080p screens dominate Chinese trade show

1080p was the big buzzword at the fifth annual China International Consumer Electronics Show (better known as SINOCES), but it didn’t seem to mean very much. Visitors report that 1080p labels were appearing on all manner of screens, regardless of their actual resolution.
One interpretation of 1080p status seems to be a panel that will accept a 108p signal, only to downscale it to the native resolution of the display. Confusing to say the least.
Hisense, one of the bigger Chinese brands says it will be shipping genuine 1080p products later this year. Countrymate Haier also confirmed that it will be delivering 1080p screens into Europe. Interestingly, there were no signs of any Chinese brands showing HD DVD products.
SINOCES hosted more than 390 exhibitors and attracted over 62,000 attendees, including 5,300 traveling from outside China. “The Chinese consumer electronics industry continues to boom, providing incredible opportunities for foreign companies to expand into the Chinese marketplace,” proclaimed Todd Thibodeaux, senior vice president of industry relations at the CEA.
