Toshiba pays former employee 87 million yen for inventions

August 1st, 2006 · No Comments

Toshiba has come to a multi-million yen accommodation with a former employee who claims to have invented flash memory. Fujio Masuoka received 87 million yen from the Corporation after inventing two kinds of flash memory devices while he worked for the company between 1980 and 1987.
Toshiba has the semiconductor patents on these devices and is estimated to have made more than 20 billion yen from the patent fees.
Masuoka believes that since he filed the lawsuit Japanese corporations have given engineers much better treatment over their inventions. Toshiba issued a statement which said that the payment “covers all the inventions made by Dr. Masuoka alone or jointly with other employees during the period of his employment by Toshiba.”
