Hollywood focuses on DVD feature premieres

August 8th, 2006 · No Comments

Sony Pictures has confirmed the creation of a new direct to DVD division. One of its first high profile projects is a new animated series. 13 episodes will go direct to DVD. Sony’s TV president Steve Mosko says: “With the growing demand for original content, it’s the perfect time to deliver programs directly to consumers.”
The huge success of DVD-only features like Presents: Stewie Griffin The Untold Story and American Pie Presents: Band Camp has fuelled interest in the concept, which previously has been monopolized by Disney’s animated spin-offs.
Warner is also getting in on the direct-to-disc act. Its animation division and DC Comics have announced 13 animated DVD premieres built around top-line comic book characters, including and The Justice League.
