LG Electronics is top of the pops when it comes to OLED panel production. According to figures from market research firm Displaybank, the Korean giant shipped 4.5 million OLED panels in quarter 2, closely followed by Samsung at 4 million units, Taiwanese OEM maker RiTdisplay with 3.7 million units, Univision with 2.2 million units, and Pioneer with 1.8 million units.
When all output is combined, Korean OLED manufacturers moved ahead of their Taiwanese rivals by more than 2 million units during Q2. The Japanese have been left to play catch-up.
Unlike LCD, OLED panels are self-illuminating and do not need a backlight. The downside is that they are currently mass-produced only in small screen sizes and have a limited life.
