Handheld videogames overtake consoles

August 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Handheld video games are beginning to usurp traditional consoles. According to data released by iSuppli, the Sony and Nintendo portables now account for more than half of all global shipments of game machines. In Japan the percentage is even higher.
This compares to handhelds owning just 30 percent of the market in 1997. Analysts are predicting that even when the PS3 and Wii have been introduced, portable sales will still account for around 40 percent and that’s without a possible introduction by Microsoft into the sector. It’s all down to a fundemental shift towards personal entertainment, some believe.
