Philips wants out of LCD

August 18th, 2006 · No Comments

It is looking increasingly likely that Philips wants out of its joint venture LCD manufacturing arrangement with LG. The volatility of the LCD panel market led the company to post a huge loss over the last quarter and according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the Dutch giant is now thought to be seeking a buyer for its stake, worth around 5 billion US dollars.
One possible buyer is Matsushita, parent of Panasonic. Philips is contractually bound to retain a 30 percent share in the joint venture until July 2007
