HD DVD strides ahead of Blu-ray in player sales

Market research company The NPD Group has revealed that in a comparison of the first six weeks of sales for HD DVD and Blu-ray, HD DVD hardware (pictured) eclipsed BD by 33 percent. But even together, both formats barely registered on the overall US sales charts; six weeks worth of HD kit made up a mere 0.4 percent of US disc player shipments. The lion’s share comprised standard DVD players, with DVD recorders contributing 13.4 percent.
