Sony coffers drained by battery debacle

August 26th, 2006 · No Comments

Although the recall of laptop batteries has made both Dell and Apple frontpage news, it’s maker Sony that is likely to suffer most.
With the Japanese giant producing both the lithium-ion batteries for its PC rivals, the total bill for the combined recall of 5.9 million packs is likely to drain as much as 256 million US dollars from Sony coffers.
The corporation has confirmed that microscopic metal particles in the suspect batteries could possibly come into contact with other components within the cell, causing a short circuit. The batteries are designed to shut down when this happens, but some units can overheat and even catch fire.
