Philips to open power LED factory for next-gen LCD TVs

September 7th, 2006 · No Comments

Philips is to open a new LED (light emitting diode) factory in Singapore. The facility will produce high-power LEDs for a variety of appliances, including a new generation of backlights. LED backlit LCD TVs have already been shown by Sony and Samsung and offer superior colour reproduction compared to standard fluorescent backlit models.
“This investment will double the production capacity of our power LEDs in the next year and strengthen our number one position in this field,” says Philips Lighting CEO Theo van Deursen. Production is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2007. The investment is part of Philips Lighting’s strategy to dominate the fast-growing power LED market.
