Region-locked Wii will not play DVDs admits Nintendo

September 16th, 2006 · No Comments

Nintendo has confirmed that its next-gen games system will sell for 179 pounds when it goes on sale in the UK on December 8.
Each pack will contain one Wii remote, one Nunchuk and a copy of Wii Sports (featuring baseball, golf, bowling, boxing and tennis mini games). Around 20 titles will be available at the European launch, priced between 36 and 39 pounds. Optional controllers will sell for 29 pounds plus another 14 if you want the Nunchuk attachment.
As expected, the unit will also allow owners to download old NES, SNES and Nintendo 64 games through Wii’s Virtual Console, for various prices. The Wii can hold up to 48 game downloads. Nintendo says that it will offer online games early 2007.
Contradicting previous reports, the Wii will not play DVDs. Perhaps more disappointing is the news that the UK console, like previous Ninty units, will be region locked.
