Xbox 360 HD DVD drive makes public debut

September 16th, 2006 · No Comments

A working prototype of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 drive made an unexpected debut at this year’s CEDIA EXPO in Denver. The show is best known for super-high end home theatre equipment, but the arrival of the humble HD DVD drive still caused quite a buzz.
In what could be the first public sighting of a working prototype, the model looked only slightly clumsy perched atop an unit. Unfortunately, the drive would not spin any HD discs, as the Xbox console had not received the firmware update which is required before the HD DVD drive will function properly.
The HD DVD camp are increasingly convinced that the inexpensive drive will play a major role in popularising the high-def disc format.
