Sony launches new 1080p SXRD projector

September 20th, 2006 · No Comments

Sony latest projector, the VPL-VW50 (pictured), will go on sale in the UK for less than 5,000 pounds. SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) technology is a proprietary LCOS variant which the brand hopes will steal market share from DLP.
The 1080p model claims a contrast ratio of up to 15,000:1 and a whisper-quiet 22dB operation. “Sony is driving the market for HD 1080 products,” says Darren Ambridge, Group Product Manager, TV and HV Group, Sony UK Limited.
“The VPL-VW50 is a significant addition to a range of products featuring Sony SXRD that includes professional cinema projectors, 55-inch and 70-inch HD 1080 Micro Display Projection televisions and of course HD 1080 Home Theatre projectors. We believe that Sony SXRD technology provides a crucial advantage when it comes to quality HD 1080 projection systems. We’re very pleased that this launch will give people another opportunity to see for themselves just how good it is.”
Other features include: quick response time of only 2.5ms; Advanced Iris 2, which allows users to fine-tune contrast manually or select between two automatic modes to have the iris respond dynamically to each scene.
Unlike its predecessor, the VPL-VW100, the model uses a 200W Ultra High Pressure (UHP) lamp and a new All Range Crisp Focus (ARC-F) lens. Video processing has also been amalgamated onto a single chip. Sony says the “VPL-VW50 has the sought-after ability to handle a 1080/24p input. This means it’s fully compatible with original cinematic 24 frames per second content, exactly as captured by the cine camera itself. This will also be available from disc players and .”
Connectivity includes two HDMI inputs.
