Massive speed hike for Ethernet traffic

October 2nd, 2006 · No Comments

You want faster internet speeds for network AV? You got ’em! Lucent Technologies’ Bell Labs has transmitted ten channels of 107-Gbit/s Ethernet traffic over 2,000 km of fiber using cable usually restricted to 40-Gbit/s transmission. The speed bump has been made possible by what Bell Labs is describing as “a prototype lithium niobate differential quadrature phase-shift keying modulator.” What sounds like gobbledegook to us apparently multiplexes and demultiplexes 107-Gbit/s data packets as if they were chump-change (or at least 40-Gbit/s).
The technology has been developed by Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology and Sumitomo Osaka Cement Inc.  Cement?
