Sony battered by battery debacle

November 2nd, 2006 · No Comments

Sony has reported huge losses in its second quarter financials, posting an operating loss of 20.8 billion yen. The corporation has been badly hurt by the recent laptop battery farrago; the battery recall alone cost Sony 51.2 billion yen. However, AV sales are on the up. Sony’s electronics division saw gains of 12.1 percent year-on-year, due to strong sales of BRAVIA screens, laptops and digital cameras.
Its movie division also reported an increase in revenue of 12.1 percent, but an operating loss of 15.3 billion yen. This is perhaps small change compared to Sony’s gaming division which has incurred an operating loss of 43.5 billion yen, largely due to the development and launch costs behind the PlayStation 3.
Game sales were down 20.5 percent year on year. As part of its half-yearly reporting, Sony reported 34 billion yen in net income, up 60 percent from last year. Net sales jumped 10 percent to 3.6 trillion yen.
