Sony to reboot PSP with movie downloads

December 19th, 2006 · No Comments

Sony believes that video downloads will be the savior of the PSP. The Corporation is being widely tipped to begin video download services for its ailing portable early in 2007. Sony has confirmed nothing, but reliable reports in the Financial Times and Wall Street Journal indicate that the company is well advanced on plans to allow films and TV content to be downloaded to MemoryStick media.
In a statement, the company teases: “We are in the business of providing content for download to computers through a variety of business partners, and have said in the past that we are interested in making our content available on a wide range of mobile devices in the future, but no decisions have been made regarding next steps.”
Sony needs to reinvigorate interest in the PSP, as it increasingly slides behind Nintendo’s  DS portable in worldwide sales. Expect an official confirmation of the strategy at the January CES.
