Sony shipped its millionth PlayStation 3 into the Japanese market yesterday, two weeks later than originally anticipated. Observers from Nomura are beginning to doubt whether the company can meet its promise of six million machines shipped worldwide by the end of March. The investment firm is predicting that the company will only sell 4.5 million PS3s by the end of its financial year. Nintendo maintains that it will hit sales of six million Wii consoles in the same time period.
According to the NPD Group, the video games industry enjoyed record sales in 2006, with sales of hardware and software combined reaching a staggering 12.5 billion dollars, up 19 percent year on year.
Interestingly, only around 2 percent of US Xbox360 owners have purchased the optional HD DVD drive for the system, according to data released by NPD. The company sold 51,000 HD DVD drives in December, bring the total number of units in American homes to 92,000.
