LCD price crash wounds LG

The crash in flat panel TV prices may be good news for consumers, but for panel-makers it’s caused massive problems. In its latest set of financials, LG Electronics admits that the price erosion on LCD has led to a massive drop in profits. The company has recorded a Q4 operating loss of 43 billion won. However, growing sales from its international affiliates helped it post an overall net profit of 48 billion won, approximately a quarter of that posted a year ago.
Its panel making operation, LG.Philips, has been hardest hit, posting a capital loss of 21 billion won. The company hopes that salvation will come with a boom in sales for large-screen LCD. It intends to position itself as a key supplier of 40-inch Full HD panels during the coming year. LG also says that it plans on investing 1.7 trillion won on R&D during 200
