Expect more giveaway electronics from Asda. After announcing its headline stealing nine quid DVD player (pictured above), a spokesman said there would be more such offers to come: “You can expect much more of this kind of activity from us.”
The price initiative is part of a bigger battle between Asda’s US parent Wal-Mart and Argos, which recently announced 3000 price cuts on products. Pre-Christmas, Asda offered a 15-inch LCD TV for just 99 pounds, the first time any UK retailer had broken the 100 pound barrier.
The super-cheap Durabrand 1005 was previously sold for 17.84, comparable with other value players sold by the supermarket chains. 80,000 will be made available in the UK, but the company expects these to sell out within days. So if you want one for the spare room, snap it up quickly. The models are currently on sale in all 316 Asda superstores.
