The latest sales data from Nielsen VideoScan reveals that Blu-ray movie disc sales have thundered past HD DVD. During January, Blu-ray discs have been outselling HD DVD by as much as a factor of three. During the first week of the year, BD accounted for more than 53 per cent of sales. Just one week later, HD DVD fell to just 38.36 per cent of sales. The dramatic upsurge is down to the sudden influx of PlayStation 3 games consoles into the US market and the relative paucity of big titles on HD DVD, a consequence of the number of studios exclusively backing Blu-ray. Quite how long such dominance can be sustained remains to be seen.
