New DVD format announced for downloads

February 9th, 2007 · No Comments

The DVD forum has ratified the technical specifications for a new recordable DVD format. DVD Download discs are designed to allow digital movie downloads encoded with CSS copy-protection to be burnt in a PC and then played back in conventional DVD players. The ability to free downloads from the confines of the PC environment is expected to give a significant boost to digital distribution.
Hollywood studios are expected to support the format, allowing hit films to be made widely available as a download-to-burn option.
All blank DVD Download discs will come ‘pre-keyed’ with CSS decryption codes making them receptive to CSS-encrypted data. However users will need to invest in a new DVD burner to make the home-brew discs.
