The United States has once again taken top spot in the international patent filing league. Last year the technical superpower filed 49,555 international patents. Japan came second with 26,906, and Germany third with 16,929. Placing fourth was Korea, with 5,935. Rounding out the rest of the top ten were France, the UK, the Netherlands, China, Switzerland, and Sweden.
Francis Gurry, the WIPO deputy director-general commented “For the last 400 years essentially the world’s technologies have been produced in European languages but now we are finding an increasing number of patents in science and technology articles coming out in Korea, Japan and China.”
