Sony plans PS3 download push but says no to price cuts

February 19th, 2007 · No Comments

Sony is keen to build the network entertainment aspect of its business to cover movie, music and TV downloads as part of a strategic ten year plan, but it’s in less of a hurry to cut the cost of its console.
Talking about a rival service to Microsoft’s hugely successful Xbox Live, Sony chief Phil Harrison says “We have a hard drive, we have a commerce engine, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out we will have that on the network very shortly.”
Harrison denies that price cuts for the unit are imminent; claiming instead that talk of component cost reduction in Japan has been misinterpreted as price cuts on the console. “Obviously, we are investing our money in making PlayStation 3s cheaper to manufacture, as part of our business plan,” he says.
