LG will release a hybrid Blu-ray HD DVD recorder in the US this autumn. The model will be the first to play and burn to Blu-ray media, while offering playback compatibility for HD DVD discs. The surprise announcement was made by LG’s corporate VP of public affairs John Taylor at the 37th Annual International Recording Media Association Forum.
Taylor says LG says can’t meet demand for its first generation Super Multi Blue hybrid Blu-ray HD DVD player (pictured above). Stateside demand has surprised the company, despite the 1200 dollar asking price. Taylor says that despite criticism when the product, which uses a single blue laser diode to read both BD and HD DVD software, was unveiled at this year’s CES, LG has been encouraged by dealer and consumer reaction. Other brands are expected to announce hybrid HD players shortly.
