The latest sales data from the US will give cold comfort to Sony on the eve of its launch of the technically denuded European version of the PlayStation 3. The Nintendo Wii remains the leading next generation games platform, according to market data from NPD. 335,000 were sold in February, compared to 228,000 Xbox 360s and just 127,000 PS3s. But while the PS3 is running cold, its predecessor continues to sell well, thanks to the one thing the PS3 just can’t match: strong games.
To coincide with the European PS3 rollout, Sony will make new firmware available for download. Version 1.6 adds the ability to download files from the PlayStation Network in the background. Currently, a big download will effectively stop a player from using the console. Also included in the update is an improved web browser.
