Sonys says PS3 launch biggest in history

March 27th, 2007 · No Comments

Sony says that with sales of 165,000 (from a stock of 220,000) over its launch weekend, the is the fastest selling games console in UK history. Supply shortages famously limited the introductions of its rivals. Nintendo’s Wii sold 105,000 units when launched in December and remains elusive still. The Xbox 360 debuted with sales of just 70,000. Sony’s PSP handheld sold 185,000 units when launched but has gone on to flounder against Nintendo’s DS.
HMV has slammed Sony’s decision to give away 46in Bravia TVs at the London launch of the PS3 as an unnecessary stunt. Quoted on GamesIndustry.biz a spokesperson said it was “unnecessary in the greater scheme of things, especially as it may have encouraged some of the more cynical media to think of it as a last-minute attempt to bolster queues and PR coverage. If Sony had that kind of money to spend I’m surprised they didn’t just invest it in a truly memorable and fantastic launch event.”
Some pundits have suggested that the number of people queuing at the event was boosted by those that had insider knowledge of the impending giveaway, including Sony personnel and media.
