HD DVD and Blu-ray prices to crash

April 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

The price of and players is crashing. According to market research firm Understanding and Solutions, come December both formats will be available for half of their 2006 prices. “The rapid reduction of regular DVD pricing took many by surprise and they felt this curve couldn’t be re-created with high-def,” says director Jim Bottoms, “but all evidence suggests that the price curve for the high-def formats is mirroring that of the DVD player.” Bottoms predicts that by 2009, dedicated HD players will retail for 200 dollars.
The smart money though, indicates that buyers won’t even have to wait that long for bargain-priced hi-def. Hardware depreciation is happening faster than for DVD. In response to Toshiba’s recent HD DVD price cuts, Samsung has already slashed the retail price of its BP-1000 player to 470 dollars.
